Nature Club

THE HARTLAND NATURE CLUB

According to the first book of minutes under the date of November 16, 1907: “A meeting of those interested in the study of nature called for this afternoon at the residence of the writer brought out an attendance of four.” After a discussion it was decided to organize a Nature Club in Hartland and a constitution was drawn up and adopted.  The four in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Jay Underwood who were the hosts, Mrs. Charles C. Gates and Miss Carroll Spaulding.

The Constitution states: “The object of the association is to promote friendly intercourse among the students of nature in Hartland and to secure a more thorough knowledge of the Natural History of Hartland.”  This has been updated to “The HNC welcomes everyone to learn about and care for our natural heritage.” We believe the club is the oldest of its kind in the state and possibly in the nation.

Club meeting, July 20th, 1920

Except for two years during World War I, the club met regularly from 1907 to 2012 to observe and discuss nature. However, since 2012 there have only been occasional gatherings as many long-time members have died and interest in the Club has waned.

Club meeting, October 1st, 1955

The Club has a small museum in Damon Hall with a collection of books and nature related artifacts which is open on Old Home Day (July 4th) and by appointment. Judy Howland is the acting president and can be contacted at jhowland44@gmail.com.
