Conservation Commission
The Hartland Conservation Commission was formed in 1989 to provide conservation leadership and stewardship of the Town’s natural resources. We meet monthly except August. In July our meeting is on July 4 at Old Home Day. Other meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7PM, lower level of Damon Hall. The public are always welcome at our meetings. In 1977 Vermont passed enabling legislation to establish municipal conservation commissions. The major goal of a conservation commission is to establish community responsibility for community natural resources. Vermont’s Commissions provide conservation leadership and steward a town’s natural resources, but they don’t have a regulatory function. Hartland’s Commission was formed in 1989.
Our town of over 3,000 people is growing, and has many special resources that we are working hard to protect for our community - now and in the future. We also administer the Conservation Trust Fund. The CTF was established in 1989 to support "planning and preservation of the town's natural and cultural resources for the continuing benefit of the town’s people”. Contributions from the fund, though often small, have enormous leveraging power in obtaining conservation grants and demonstrating our town's commitment to conservation. We have partnered with the Upper Valley Land Trust, Vermont Land Trust and Nature Conservancy to conserve important landscapes in Hartland.
In October of 2023, the Hartland Conservation Commission hosted a talk by Jay Boeri on the history of Sumner Falls. The local cable-access TV station, Junction Arts and Media (JAM), recorded the talk, and a recording is now available at https://www.youtube.com/
